INAUGURATION OF 20MW SOLAR PV POWER PLANT WITH 5MW BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM BY JCM POWER AT GOLOMOTI, DEDZA
The State President His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has inaugurated the 20MW Hybrid Solar PV Power Plant with 5MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) by JCM Power at Golomoti in Dedza district.
The state of the art power plant is the first utility-scale grid-connected hybrid solar and battery energy storage project in Malawi and the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa. It comprises 52,000 bi-facial solar panels and 5MW lithium-ion batteries, making it more efficient to generate and store power.
This project aligns with the National Energy Policy’s priority areas and Malawi 2063’s objectives to increase the country’s generation capacity and encourage private sector participation in the energy sector by involving Independent Power Producers.
The project represents government’s commitment to achieving universal access to electricity as per aspirations enshrined in the Malawi 2063 as well as in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7. As a renewable and clean energy project, it also represents government’s commitment towards Glassglow Climate Pact signed at CoP 26 to reduce Green House Gas emissions by 51 per cent in 2040.
