Government made a decision to develop a Coal Fired Power Plant at Kam’mwamba in order to increase generation capacity and also diversify the generation from hydro with the aim of having steady supply of electricity for social and economic development. The coal fired power plant is envisaged to be developed through the state-owned power generation company EGENCO. Currently, EGENCO has floated a tender to procure a consultant to review and update the feasibility study for the project which will include production of detailed designs and tender documents. EGENCO is also engaging another consultant to assess the availability, quantity and quality of local coal. This study will also compare the feasibility of running the coal fired plant on either local or foreign coal resources; or a mix of the two..
The Chiweta geothermal project is located in the Rumphi district (Northern Region of Malawi), 370 km north of Lilongwe. The site falls in the northern portion of the Malawi rift and is underlain by biotitic gneisses of the Basement Complex, covered by clastic sediments of the Karoo System and by a thin level of Quaternary deposits. The geoscientific investigations performed over the prospect, inclusive of geological, geochemical, gravimetric and geoelectrical surveys and allowed to elaborate the conceptual model of the field.
The Government of Malawi conducted wind measurements and a prefeasibility study for wind power generation at Lunjika in Mzimba district. The study showed that the wind farm layout consisting of 29 V126, 3.6MW turbines and a hub height of 117meters could be designed with a total capacity of 104 MW and the annual energy (AEP) production of 510GWh/y.The total investment cost is estimated at EUR202.3 million and the project is expected to be developed by the private investor. This project is one of the initiatives by the Government to diversify power generation sources away from hydropower while at the same time increasing the share of renewables in the country’s energy mix. Apart from the Mzimba wind site, the Government of Malawi also conducted st
